Experiences

Campus Farm Experiences:

At St. Mary's College of Maryland, we have a campus farm called the Kate Community Campus Farm where many students are involved either as farm interns or associated with a class. For my class called Field Study in Sustainable Agriculture, we got to do physical labor on the farm and grow new plants. One activity that we did at the farm really stuck with me which was our bouquet workshop. During this workshop, many students engaged in an activity where we could pick our own flowers from the land and make our own beautiful bouquets. Making my bouquet was very fun and let me bring out my creative side. This activity allowed me to connect with nature more than I usually do and being able to bring something beautiful from nature inside with me.

Environmental Science Lab experiences:

During my sophomore year at SMCM, I took a class called Intro to Environmental Science and it included a lab. In the lab, we would don various experiments that dealt with things like soil, water, or living organisms. Well, for one of the lab, our lab section put on some waders and went into a stream to measure fun things like velocity, distance, and volume. Doing this experiment was especially fun for me since I got a little soaked since one of my boots had a hole in it. But I learned a lot from this and made me realize how much I want to do field work in my career. I loved getting into that stream and looking from different organisms within the sand while learning how to measure the velocity of stream with actual good quality technology. I would totally do this again.
